They key to exploitation of people is a heightened susceptibility to suggestion, to a so-called ‘prime truth’. Dogma is believed. Exploitation means that you don’t care much for the unused talents and the latent ability of people. You instill fear. Take what you can get and run. Exploitation realists see the world as it is: an arena of power moved primarily by perceived immediate self-interests, where morality is rhetorical rationale for expedient action and self-interest.
Conversely, exploration of people is very different. To get ahead in a competitive world you need thinkers. That means you don’t dare stop until you have produced at least one creative idea. Developing the thinking skills of your people is one of the mightiest acts of strategy you will ever achieve. Take your people courageously into new mental realms. Think originally. If they can contribute one ounce of original thought, if they can originate just one new idea, you have dared well. Also, recognize the danger of a half-used mind.
Remember that valuable possessions multiply when shared.
