Hear me out for a second, there is an African proverb that says “If there is no enemy within then the enemies on the outside can not hurt you”. I am also reminded by the words of Eleanor Roosevelt who said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Anyway, I was watching a politician recently, spewing his vitriol towards a certain population group in his country, and he was doing so in the name of free speech which is his right to do in a democracy. While watching this rabble-rouser I again realised the importance of not allowing myself to get inflamed within my soul by hate for this person. It takes courage not to hate back. Hate is an enemy inside. Hate will consume me if I allow it to take root. Hate is a very unproductive state of mind.
It takes skill to listen and separate as to what is being said and how it is being said. The continual development of emotional intelligence in us is vital. A highly developed emotional intelligence provides us with courage, foresight, good reasoning, self-awareness, good decision making and determination to contribute powerfully to society without hate and anger.
Consider seriously in developing emotional intelligence in you as a leader and the people you are surrounded
