The Real Emerging POWER in Africa

Africa is a vast continent with 1.2 billion people. We have 54 sovereign states.  The investment opportunities are massive with big emerging markets. Behind all opportunities in these emerging markets are people, the powerful African human capital. To prepare for the opportunities, we need to train our people not only in all things skills and expertise, but also in all things human relations. People that are not trained in human relation skills can be the difference between profit and loss or survival or extinction of a company. One of the best ways to teach human relation skills is by teaching and deploying emotional intelligence.  In Africa, for Africa, for the African context, for African excellence. Our people are the real POWER to developmental and growth success. If you grow them, then they grow you.

Everyone has emotions. It‘s a simple fact – a part of our being human. And whether we realize it or not, these emotions impact us every day. They also impact those around us, both in the workplace and in our personal lives. Who wouldn’t want a higher level of emotional intelligence? Studies have shown that high levels of emotional intelligence boost career success, company success, mental health, relationship satisfaction, humour, and happiness. It is also the best medicine to work stress and building personal resilience.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) involves a set of skills that help us perceive, understand, express, reason with and manage emotions, both within ourselves and others. We can apply these skills to help us become more conscious of our own and others’ feelings and more conscious of the influence emotions are having on our decisions, behaviour and performance. This in turn helps us minimize the unproductive influence emotions can have and maximize people’s productive qualities.

Teaching our people emotional intelligence skills is vital. In fact EQ has twice the power of IQ to predict and drive performance. EQ is also a better predictor and driver than employee skill, knowledge, or expertise.
